Wall-to-wall carpeting comes in rolls, and these rolls often come in 12-feet widths; however, depending on the carpet manufacturer, you might also find carpet widths of 13’2” and 15’.  Carpet manufactured in other countries is typically four meters wide, which translates to 13’2”.  If you are shopping for commercial carpeting, you can likely find carpet rolls with six-foot widths.

Before installation, professionals will measure the room to determine what carpet width should be ordered and what direction they should lay the carpet rolls. The goals are to create as little waste as possible and to limit the visibility of seams.  When a carpet is ordered, 10 to 20 percent is often added to the room measurement to ensure there is not a shortage of materials for the installation.

Area Rugs

If you are looking to add an area rug to your space, it is important to note that they also come in standard sizes. Sizes you can expect are:

  • 5 x 8 feet
  • 6 x 9 feet
  • 8 x 10 feet

For larger spaces, typical sizes you might find are:

  • 8 x 10 feet
  • 10 x 12 feet
  • 10 x 14 feet
  • 12 x 15 feet

For smaller spaces like an entryway or in front of the bathroom sink, you can expect sizes such as:

  • 3 x 5 feet
  • 4 x 6 feet

Hallway runners often come in these sizes:

  • 2 x 7 feet
  • 2 x 8 feet

Despite these common measurements, there, of course, are brands that offer less commonly found sizes, and you can always purchase custom options. If customization appeals to you and you like the look and quality of wall-to-wall carpeting, you can get a piece of wall-to-wall carpet cut to your room’s custom size and finished with a variety of binding and serging options. This option gives you endless styles to choose from and true customization over the size.
